About Us
Fleury Winds is named in recognition of the late MMF Cabinet Minister John Fleury, honouring his service to the Manitoba Métis Federation, his enduring connection to the Red River Métis of southwestern Manitoba, and commemorating his place within the cultural life of the region and our Homeland.
The project reflects values that guided his work and have been long held within Red River Métis communities: respect for land, responsibility to future generations, strong kinship ties, and the importance of community‑led stewardship. These principles guide the development of the wind project and align with a broader vision of sustainability, self‑determination, and careful use of resources.
The name ‘Fleury’ is of French origin, and is derived from the Latin name “Florus,” which means flowering or flourishing.
By carrying his name, the project acknowledges a life rooted in community and honours the cultural continuity of the Red River Métis, whose relationship to the land informs both tradition and future‑focused initiatives such as renewable energy development.
The Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF) is the democratically elected National Government of the Red River Métis, also known as the Manitoba Métis. The Red River Métis are a distinct Indigenous Nation and People and Canada’s Negotiating Partners in Confederation and the Founders of the Province of Manitoba.
Launched in October 2024, the Red River Métis Power Corporation (RRMPC) is an affiliate of the Manitoba Métis Federation with a mandate to develop wind power capacity in Manitoba, along with other long-term energy and economic development objectives.
